Message from the Scientific Director, Dr. Samuel Weiss

Happy Holidays From all of us at CIHR-INMHA

Dear Colleagues,

Looking back on 2020, this year has been a difficult one for many — changing the way we live, work, communicate and conduct our day-to-day lives. Though this year’s holiday season might look different than in previous years, our team wishes you — our friends, colleagues and supporters — a safe, restful and joyful holiday that allows you to prioritize your mental health, recharge and return ready to take on the new year.

Because of COVID-19, many well-laid plans for 2020 were delayed, modified, cancelled or extended at work and at home. Despite many significant upheavals, it is truly remarkable how much we have accomplished together this year — both inside and outside the COVID-19 context — in the mental health and substance use space. One of these major accomplishments, the COVID-19 and Mental Health Initiative, was developed as a proactive response to provide urgent knowledge and evidence to support decision-making throughout the mental health responses to the pandemic. However, it is clear that there is still a substantial need for new knowledge in order to address some of our most pressing brain and mental health challenges — and CIHR-INMHA has a plan to meet those needs head-on.

INMHA Strategic Plan 2020-2022

As 2020 comes to an end, I am pleased to announce the publication of the INMHA Strategic Plan 2020-2022, which outlines much of the work we plan to achieve in collaboration with our colleagues, supporters and partners next year and beyond. Though the publication of the strategic plan was delayed in March 2020 by COVID-19, this document allows CIHR-INMHA to thoughtfully and strategically align resources to prioritize the best possible brain and mental health outcomes for all Canadians.

To round off this year of challenges and achievements, the staff at CIHR-INMHA would like to express a heartfelt thank you for your collaboration, flexibility, support, and above all else, your dedication. I could not be prouder of Canada’s research community.

Best wishes for a safe and healthy holiday,

Dr. Samuel Weiss
