New Scientific Director for CIHR-IMHA
Dr. Karim Khan has been appointed as new Scientific Director for CIHR Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (CIHR-IMHA). (Twitter @KarimKhan_IMHA)
Dr. Roderick McInnes, Acting President of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), along with CIHR's Governing Council, announced today the appointment of Dr. Karim Khan as the new Scientific Director of CIHR’s Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis. This appointment will be effective October 1, 2017.
Dr. Khan brings to the position 25 years of experience as a clinician, researcher and professor. Most recently, he has served as the co-director of the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Centre for Hip Health and Mobility, a $40-million centre funded by the Canada Foundation for Innovation.
Dr. Khan has been a professor at UBC since 2000, co-authored the best-selling textbook Brukner & Khan’s Clinical Sports Medicine, now in its fifth edition, and has a track record of over 300 highly cited peer-reviewed publications.
Since 2008, Dr. Khan has also been the editor-in-chief of the high-impact British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM). In the pursuit of knowledge translation and stakeholder engagement, he established the BJSM social media accounts, podcast and blog that have reached millions of viewers and listeners.
As Scientific Director, Dr. Khan will work with the Canadian musculoskeletal, skin and oral health communities to identify research priorities, develop research funding opportunities, build partnerships and translate research evidence into policy and practice to improve the health of Canadians and people around the world. Finally, as a member of CIHR's leadership team, he will participate in setting and implementing CIHR's strategic direction. Although he officially starts on October 1, you can connect with Professor Khan in his IMHA role via the Twitter account @KarimKhan_IMHA. Other social media channels will be available for the IMHA community in the fall.

Planning and Dissemination Grants on Global Health

In addition to aligning with the global health research priorities, this funding opportunity has earmarked some funds to support research on arthritis, oral health, skin and musculoskeletal health –which includes prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) via promotion of physical activity and/or reduction of sedentary behaviour. For more information about the kinds of physical inactivity and NCD challenges that we’re hoping researchers will address with the earmarked funds, please see the WHO’s factsheet. Of the $440,000 available from CIHR, $200,000 is available to fund applications in the research area relevant to CIHR – IMHA (approximately 10 grants).

Project Grant: 2016-2017 competition results
CIHR’s Foundation Grants results for 2016-17 were released on August 3. Across Canada, 76 grants were approved for a total of $199,659,488. One competition for these grants is held each year. It’s designed to support a broad base of research leaders across all areas and health-related disciplines including basic and biomedical research with a demonstrable track record of excellence and impact in their field of study; develop and maintain Canadian capacity in research and other health-related fields; provide research leaders with the flexibility to pursue innovative lines of inquiry; and contribute to the creation and application of health-related knowledge through a wide range of research and/or knowledge translation activities, including any relevant collaboration. Government of Canada announces funding that improves Indigenous health in Northwest Territories
On July 19, in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, the Honourable Jane Philpott, Minister of Health, and Robert C. McLeod, Deputy Premier, Minister of Finance, and Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Government of the Northwest Territories, and partners announced an agreement with the Tlicho Government to provide $24.9 million in funding and in-kind contributions to establish a NWT Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) Support for People and Patient-Oriented Research and Trials (SUPPORT) Unit – Hotıì ts’eeda. CIHR’s College Chairs thank everyone who agreed to join the College of Reviewers. Recruitment of other qualified and committed professionals will continue throughout the summer. As you may have read in Dr. Roderick McInnes’ message on July 10 , the College Chairs will now provide advice and guidance on building the College, and ensure that peer review processes for CIHR’s major competitions (such as Project Grants and Foundation Grants) are fair, transparent and equitable. Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR)
Applications are solicited for the CADR- Network for Canadian Oral Health and Research (NCOHR) Student Research Awards Competition for trainees to present their research at the American Association for Dental Research/CADR meeting in Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA, March 21-24, 2018. In addition, the two of the most highly ranked applicants will receive the IADR Unilever Hatton Divisional Award and will represent Canada in the Hatton Awards Competition sponsored by Unilever and the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) in London, England, in July 2018.

Arthritis Consumer Experts (ACE)
The Qualman-Davies Arthritis Consumer Community Leadership award was created in 2014 to recognize the pioneering arthritis advocacy efforts of Ann Qualman and Jim Davies who were two of the first people striving to bring awareness to arthritis across Canada.The award is given to anyone with arthritis who displays, or has displayed, selfless actions through volunteer work in their community. If you would like to nominate someone, please fill out the nomination form for them to be considered. The application deadline is August 31, 2017. Please submit completed nominations to firstname.lastname@example.org. The winning nominee and their nominator will be invited to attend the Arthritis Alliance of Canada’s 2017 Annual Meeting Reception taking place on Thursday, October 26 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Arthritis Alliance of Canada (AAC)
On July 20, The Arthritis Alliance of Canada (AAC) and The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) launched the Osteoarthritis Tool, designed to provide primary health care providers with key professional knowledge and skills necessary to effectively diagnose and facilitate the management of patients living with osteoarthritis (OA). The AAC, CFPC and the Centre for Effective Practice (CEP) joined forces to develop the Osteoarthritis Tool, to help family physicians and other healthcare providers understand that Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common, treatable, chronic illness by providing a tool that helps them identify, assess, and monitor OA; equip patients for high quality self-management; and recommend specific non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic therapies.
A launch guide in English and French were provided for ease of sharing the Tool. If you would like more information about this project, please contact Jaime Coish.
