Refugees

Canada is recognized as a leader in building partnerships and uniting researchers of different nationalities and cultures in the shared pursuit of scientific excellence. As such, there is an opportunity for our country to play a leadership role in opening up our health research community to newly arrived refugees.

Refugees Research Funding Initiatives

CIHR, in partnership with the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), launched training awards in June 2016, to support refugees stationed at Canadian research institutions. These training awards were provided in an effort to assist eligible refugees with their settlement process as well as to facilitate their re-entry into research careers similar to those they left behind. The recipients of the awards will do their training in one of the eligible Canadian research institution, under the leadership of a researcher with an independent appointment.

This initiative strengthens the Canadian health research enterprise by adding new talent and fresh perspectives to our community of researchers.
