Pre-Announcement: Expression of Interest – Seeking Members for the Reference Group for the Appropriate Review of Indigenous Research

CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC to seek expressions of interest for First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples who may wish to participate in an Indigenous Research Reference Group this fall.

For the past year, the granting agencies have engaged with Indigenous partners in a national dialogue across the country in support of a Canada Research Coordinating Committee priority to develop an interdisciplinary Indigenous research and research training model that contributes to reconciliation. The Strengthening Indigenous Research Capacity initiative seeks to develop a strategy that identifies new ways of doing research by and with Indigenous communities, including strategies to grow the capacity of First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities to lead their own research and partner with the broader research community.

The agencies are currently engaging with Indigenous partners to finalize the strategy and action plan that will be presented to the CRCC in the Fall. The agencies recognize that the Fall represents harvest and hunting season for many members of First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities.  As such, we are providing advance notice that the agencies will also be releasing a call for expressions of interest in joining an Indigenous Research Reference Group that will provide guidance on culturally appropriate review approaches and practices for research conducted by and with Indigenous communities.

The agencies aim to bring together approximately 10 members for the Reference Group that represent the diversity of Indigenous Peoples in Canada and a balance of experience, gender equity, and geographic locations. Membership on the Reference Group will include a minimum of two Elders, and collectively bring a deep cultural understanding of Indigenous research, including Indigenous Knowledge, to facilitate the advancement of peer review.

Applicants will be asked to submit 1-2 page document outlining what experience and perspective they would contribute to the Reference Group and how their participation would benefit them personally and their communities.

We look forward to sharing further news on the Strengthening Indigenous Research Capacity strategy and the Reference Group for Appropriate Review of Indigenous Research in the coming months.
