The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) and the Rare Disease Foundation co-hosted an event where scientists, physicians, patients with rare diseases and their caregivers gathered to mark Rare Disease Day on February 29.
Scientific Director of CIHR’s Institute of Genetics, Dr. Paul Lasko, emceed the event and shared information on CIHR-funded research initiatives such as CARE for RARE at CHEO. A highlight of the night was when Ottawa’s deputy mayor Mark Taylor made an official declaration of Rare Disease Day in Ottawa.
Three speakers provided different views – the family view, the researcher view and the executive view – on the importance of giving patients with rare diseases and their families a voice. All researchers wore lab coats to fuel further conversation during the networking portion that followed the speeches.
