Peer Review Committees and Mandates – Doctoral Research Award

CIHR Doctoral Research Awards are provided to trainees who are pursuing a doctoral degree in a health-related field:

  • The Canada Graduate Scholarships – Doctoral program (CGS-D) provides special recognition and support to students who are pursuing a doctoral degree in a health-related field in Canada.
  • The Doctoral Foreign Study Award (DFSA) provides special recognition and support to students who are pursuing a doctoral degree in a health-related field abroad.

The evaluation of Doctoral Research Award applications focuses on the applicant's track record, research ability and potential and relevant experience and achievements obtained within and beyond academia.

Applications are assigned to one of the two multi-disciplinary committees described below based on the scientific area of the proposed research activities*.

*Note: The scientific area is based on CIHR’s four broad themes. Generally, applications related to the biomedical and/or clinical research themes are categorized as part of the biomedical scientific area while applications related to the health services and/or social, cultural, environmental and population health research themes are categorized as part of the health research scientific area. A particular theme of research may overlap scientific areas; however, it is the candidate’s responsibility to determine which is most appropriate, representing more than fifty percent of the research project. For more information, consult the Guidelines for the Eligibility of Applications Related to Health.
