Description

The CIHR Institute of Aging (CIHR-IA) has a broad mandate to support research and build research capacity in the field of aging.

Through the travel awards for trainees the CIHR-IA seeks to encourage networking and exchange of ideas among emerging scholars working within the CIHR-IA priority research topics. In particular, CIHR-IA would like to encourage interdisciplinary dialogue and cross-disciplinary exposure of research on aging and seniors' issues. This could be accomplished through the participation of trainees in aging at academic meetings of related disciplines, or participation of currently unaffiliated researchers (i.e. outside the field of aging) in conferences, meetings and symposia on aging. To meet these ends, CIHR-IA provides travel awards for Master's and Doctoral students, and Fellows to present their own research at a conference, workshop or symposium.

Partner/Collaborator Participation

The CIHR Institute of Aging continues to work with partners to promote the participation of relevant disciplines at conferences, workshops and symposia.

Funds Available

CIHR's contribution to the amount available for these awards is subject to availability of funds voted annually to CIHR by parliamentary appropriations, and the conditions that may be attached to them.

The maximum amount for a single award is $1,000 (to offset costs of travel, accommodation, registration fees, and other related expenses). In addition to the partnered awards, 16 awards will be available per year.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be registered in a Master's or Doctoral program or be at the post-PhD or post-health professional degree stage.
  • Applications must be for events taking place at least eight (8) weeks after the application deadline.
  • The applicant must be the first author and presenter of the presentation or poster.
  • Only one (1) travel award will be given to a student or Fellow in any CIHR fiscal year.
  • For each competition, the number of trainees applying from the same research team (same supervisor) is limited to 2.

Allowable Costs

Applicants must provide a clear budget justification for the amount of funding being requested.

Expenses eligible for support include:

  • Travel costs
  • Accommodation expenses
  • Per Diem for Meals (applicants must use their home institution's per diem rates)
  • Conference registration fees

Review Process and Evaluation

A committee will evaluate the application based on the criteria stated below:
